SUMMARY OF NEWS For the Week ending April 14, 1874 A. letter from Siamj thus describes a ne at an exhibition given by some na tive jugglers : "1 hat is .Norodom, whispered Youn- Tajac in my ear. The, old yogi-like Xtfrodom took the goblet and blew his breath upon the con tents till they broke into a pale bine flame. This Tepada extinguished with his breath, when Aorodom held the goblet to Iuan lips, and she drained the con tents with a ,sigh. As if transfigured she suddenly sprangto her feet, her face strange- 1- radiant, and began to spin giddily a- rnund in one spot. A moment later the thing sat up, and stared blinking and vacant around the vault an old, wrinkled man, with mumbling chops, a shrivelled bfeast and belly, and little tufts of white hair upon his chin and forehead. Tepada approached him reverently upon his knees, bringing him a salver, with wine and a wafer-cake. The old man did not notice him, but ate, drank, then tottered to his feet, the feeblest, decrepit old dotard that ever walked. In another moment he saw the Xautch-girl slumbering upon her couch; he shuffled feebly to her, and mum bling, stooped as if to help his dim eyes to see her better. -With a glad cry the maid en waked, clasped him in her arms and to her breast, and kissed him.- Incomprehen sible maeic : Me was no loncer a none- genarian dotard, but a full-veined, fiery vouth, who gave her kiss for kiss. How the transformation was wrought I have no idea, but there it was before our very eyes. The music grew soft and passionate, the chxirns of the old women came out, and with strange Phallic songs and dances bore the two away a bridal pair. I never ex pect again to behold a sight so wonder ful as that whole transformation, which, I may mention, my learned Jesuit friend, to whom ! described it, regards as a piece of pure Wmbohsin. His explanation is too ong and too learned to quote, but he con nects this ceremony with the world-old mvth of Venus and Adonis, and claims that it is all a form of sun-worship. The show went on for some time longer with many curious feats. At the end of an iour the Phallic procession returned, but this time the Bavadere led it, a strange triumph in her eve, while the youth lay up on the'eouch sleeping. The Phallic chorus sank into a dirge, the youth failed visibly; he was again the shrivelled dotard; he sighed, then breathed no more. Luan Prabana retired sorrowfully; Norodom and enada wrapped the corpse again in its interminable; shrouds, restored it to the coffin, sealed it carefully, and it was borne a Way again. The attendants climbed up to and extinguished the lights. 1 was blindfolded and borne away again. 1 found myself once more at the doorway of the temple in the broad sunslune with my friends and the mvstic ceremonies of the great temple ot J uthia were ovcrr it may be for many years. TIIE HERMIT OF BAhD MOUNTAIN. SHADOWS. THE DETECTIVE BUSINESS IS NEW YORK. A letter to the Troy Times says : The secrets of this detective department, could they be told, would be of a startling char acter. Here all the mysterious bank rob beries have been discussed, and also all the bloody tragedies which have of late years vexed this city, (jne of these is the mur der of James Rogers, one of the propriet ors of the Troy house, who was stabbed while sweeping his sidewalk Another is the recent tenement-house murder, whose mystery now seems beyond all penetration. But above all there is the Nathan mystery, whose perplexity is all the more annoying because of the tantalizing reward, which amount (845,000) has never been equaled on this continent. One of the most import ant features in this .department is the re cords of the "Shadows." This class is de tailed to watch the movements of suspected persons, which is done either to convict them of desperate crime or to assist in ripen ing suspicion and procuring testimony for future use. If a man neglects his duties at some bank or warehouse in which he may have an important office, his case may be put in the hands of a shadower. JI his fellow will place himself on the track with- out exciting suspicion, and this track wall be maintained for hours. A H all street financier, for instance, takes a Broadway stage, and the shadower who has followed him from the bank immediately orders a cab and follows the stage, whose number is taken so as to avoid mistake. 1 he hn- ancier halts at Delmonieo's, where a few friends are Avaiting him, and the shadower discharges the cab, out of which he comes muffled in a huge overcoat, and takes ins station on the sidewalk, where he displays a basket of nice candies for sale, and now and then finds a customer. He will patient ly maintain that candy trade till the hn ancier appears, perhaps after a delay of ii ' . . , , , three or four hours. The latter has had a capital dinner, and conies out in fine spirits .. i c c 1 -VT C il with a group oi menus, jsouo oi mem . .... ... , , want candy, but in ottering it the snadower has caught a glimpse ot their countenances, which he will not soon iorget. One may beinother Wall street man, while the oth ers are well known gamblers. A short walk takes them to Morrissey's gambling hell; and as the shadower follows, he con trives to stop1 at a cigar store and leave his basket.
